Olliff Butterfly Tapestry I by Alice Vantrease
This tapestry was commissioned in honor of S. Ed Olliff of Statesboro, GA. It contains native plants and animals surrounding the Statesboro area along with a crown of thorns encircling the intersection of the cross. The hand of God is depicted at the top admist sprays of lilies. Please note the long pair of boots on the lower right hand corner. Mrs. Olliff discarded the old boots prior to Mr. Olliff's death. He was desolate hen he discovered they had been discarded saying, "Those were my lucky boots. They carried me through the Pacific during World War II. Mrs. Olliff had them included as a reminder of the dedication of the men who fought in that war and in honor of his service. The tapestries are now in the hands of a finisher and will be hung in the narthex of the First United Church in Statesboro, Ga.
Suggested Fibers
Paternayan persian wool was used in the two Olliff tapestries. The native animals and plants on the banner were stitched in petit point. The background was completed in gros point.
